Anthony, Piers (Piers A. D. Jacob), BIO OF AN OGRE, 1988, Ace, HB.
This is the mid-life literary autobiography of one of America's most
sucessful writers of fantasy and science fiction. Most of the
material in the book seems to be rewritten from Anthony's many
personal afterwards in his novels. There is little here that
the
dedicated Anthony reader had not read before. Anthony does fill
in
some of the details of his long standing feud with major figures of
science fiction's "fandom." Anthony is one of the very few
sucessful writers in the genre who remained outside the world of
"fandom" and conventions, and the ultra chauvanistic Science
Fiction
Writers of America.
Baxter, John, SCIENCE FICTION IN THE CINEMA: 1895--1970, 1970A. S.
Barnes, Trade. This was a standard work for many years, but has now
been superceeded by a host of more current texts. It is especially
useful for investigating 60's attitudes toward science fiction.
Bloom, Harold, ed., WALKER PERCY, 1986, Chelsea House, HB. This
anthology of critical writings on Percy's fiction, by some of
America's academic heavyweights, may tell more about the state of
critical thought than it does about the author. It occured to
me,
while reading this volume, that these critics really do not react well
to the "visionary novel." The critics seem to love Percy's
early
novels about alienated loners in the South, but are most unhappy with
the his futuristic satire LOVE IN THE RUINS (1972 entry).

Ebert, Roger, ROGER EBERT'S MOVIE HOME COMPANION, 1987, Andrews,
McMeel and Parker (Kansas City, MO), Trade. This was used as index
to
popular media critical opinion. Ebert is considered a "friendly"
critic on the subject of genre films like science fiction, horror,
Westerns, and thrillers. If Ebert is a "friendly," I would hate
to
see what the "enemy" is like. Ebert seem totally oblivious to
the
basic archetypal and mythological urge which drives such genre films.
And when he does realize that element, as in his amazingly boneheaded
review of THE NATURAL (see 198- entry), he uses it as amunition for
ridicule! It is a sad comment on the state of film criticism
when
most of the media critics regularly deliver "reviews" consistantly
below the level of 5th graders reciting "I liked this movie
because..." Ebert is not the worst of the lot, to be sure (his
pseudomodernist snob oriented partner, Gene Sikel is surely worse),
but it is sad to see some potential insight wasted in Ebert's work.

Estren, Mark James, HISTORY OF UNDERGROUND COMICS, A, A, 1974,
Straight Arrow Books, Trade. A well written survey, written right at
the height of the underground explosion. There is enough graphic
reproductions to satify the the need for comparitive studies.
Estren, Mark James, HISTORY OF UNDERGROUND COMICS, A, B, 1987, Ronin
Publishing Inc. (Berkeley, CA), Trade. Revised ed. This is little
more than a black and white reproduction of the 1974 edition (which
highlighed a lot of its graphics in red). Ronin Publishing might
have
at least checked to see if some of the graphic had come loose from
the
stats when they printed this. There are captions for graphics
that
are not there, and other sloppy mistakes. About all that has
been
updated about this edition is the biography of the author.
Since
1974 Mark Estren has become a rich yuppie business executive.
It is
enough to make a counterculturalist throw up all over the cover.
There is a need for an updated history of the Underground Comic, which
covers the sudden decline of the genre in 1973 and 1974, and which
takes a serious look at its place in those chaotic times. This
edition will do if you can't find the original edition.

Garfield, Brian, WESTERN FILMS: A COMPLETE GUIDE, 1988, Da Capo Press,
Trade. Reprint of 1982 title. This is a helpful guide to Western
movies. Garfield is a novelist best known for modern thrillers,
like
DEATHWISH and HOPSCOTCH, but has also written Westerns. Garfield
has
a genuine affection for the genre, which makes for enjoyable reading.
He also has very strong opinions about the Western as a art form.
Dispite his own personal involvement in Western film projects, his
view of the form is a literary one. The book is at its best when
it
focus is upon reasons for the complete decline of the form as
a
popular genre, during the 70's. Garfield blames the
decline of the
Western on changing values in the viewers, and on the "revisionist"
westerns of the 60's and 70's. It all boils down to decadence,
according to Garfield. While I find myself in disagreement with many
of his critical opinions, the book remains the most thoughtfull of
the
many surveys that I have seen on the subject.

which
have become very popular in the 80's. Levy's subject is Ira Einhorn
and the alledged murder of his lover, Holly Maddux, but the book
is
also an invaluable look at the social dynamics of the late
counterculture and the "consciousness expansion" movement of
the
70's. Einhorn was a influencial figure in these circles, and
the
information in Levy's book helps understand how he moved, mostly
behind the scenes, to manipulate many in these movements. It's
too
bad the author, or most likely the publisher, did not see fit
to
provide an index!

either
belabored the obvious, or has veered of into the realms of
pseudolinguistics and semiotics. This is the first
volume that
really bores beneath the skin of Pynchon's work. Moore
also seems to
be the only Pynchon critic that has come to grips with Pynchon's
esoteric borrowings, and the basic mysticism of his writings.
